Functional and biochemical characterization of a putative antibacterial type six secretion system effector of the foodborne pathogen Salmonella Dublin

This project, led by Dr. David Pezoa, seeks to understand how the effector of the antibacterial type six secretion system (T6SS) contributes to the ability of Salmonella Dublin to infect and compete with other bacteria, which will improve knowledge about the virulence and bacterial competition mechanisms of Salmonella. Funding: FONDECYT-ANID

Genetic consequences of deforestation in the Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) across its distribution in Chile

The project led by Dr. Yanina Poblete seeks to assess how deforestation patterns shape the genetic structure of the Magellanic woodpecker across its distribution in Chile, in order to contribute information regarding the vulnerability and connectivity of its populations across its distribution in Chile. Funding: Regular Research Projects – UDLA: DI-41/22.

Epidemiology and characterization of influenza A virus in domestic dogs and cats in central Chile

The project led by Francisca Di Pillo seeks to explore the role of pets in the epidemiology of the influenza A virus. Through semi-structured surveys of owners and diagnosis of Influenza A in pets, the project aims to establish risk factors that influence the occurrence of influenza A in pets. This project, led by Dr. David Pezoa, seeks to functionally and biochemically characterize an effector of the type six secretion system (T6SS) of Salmonella Dublin, and to understand its role in infection and bacterial competition. This will expand knowledge about the virulence of Salmonella and contribute to new food safety strategies. Funding: FONDECYT-ANID Iniciación

Granulomatous response led by Gamma delta (gd) T cells against cattle non-fertile Cystic Echinococcosis cyst is disrupted by Fasciola hepatica natural co-infection

In this project, whose principal investigator is Dr. Rodolfo Paredes and where Dr. Christian Hidalgo is co-investigator, tissues infected by Echinococcus granulosus and Fasciola hepatica are investigated, evaluating the innate and adaptive immune response from a histological standpoint. The project seeks to understand the role of gamma-delta T lymphocytes in the pathophysiology of cystic echinococcosis in cattle. Funding: FONDECYT-ANID Regular 1231620.

Wetland Ecosystems Laboratory Transfer: Development of sustainable biotechnological applications for the O’Higgins Region

Led by Dr. Gemma Rojo, with Dr. Christian Hidalgo as co-investigator, this project creates a wetland analysis laboratory for its conservation by the local community. Hidalgo studies snails to assess the presence of trematode parasites as an indicator of wetland health. Funding: FIC O’Higgins Project.

Risk-taking behavior relates to oxidative status and Haemosporidian infection in Zonotrichia capensis

The project, derived from Dr. Yanina Poblete’s postdoctoral research, seeks to assess whether risk-related behavior is related to the occurrence of malaria infection and whether this relationship impacts the oxidative status of wild birds.
